Brazilian race car driver Nelson Piquet Jr has motor racing in the blood. His father was a Formula 1 Champion and his younger brother is nipping at his heels.

Nelson joined the iON team and I was assigned to manage the relationship. I met with him in London for the Formula E Final race of the season, I took some photos, a quick interview and gave him some product. Later on that day, he went down in history for winning the first ever Formula E Championship.

He then jumped on a flight and flew to Washington, DC and won the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship proving that his driving skill is consistent through the racing disciplines. For an athlete manager, this kind of performance is absolute gold!

Nelson’s Manager Steve sent me their schedule and there was a week in the UK testing Formula E at Donington Park. I decided that this would be a good opportunity to pull in some resources and capture some great content. I planned to visit for two days, the first to scope out the location and meet some of the team. I was also able to  get some cameras mounted on the car to capture some angles. The FIA are often very restrictive around the use of action cameras in race driving so this was a bonus. The second day I was joined by Creative Capture and my assistant Max Coates. (Max, a semi-pro race driver himself) had put together a list of interview questions and I had planned a brief for the film crew.

Steve had scheduled an hour between racing for us to interview Nelson in front of the camera. My van was iON branded so this made a perfect backdrop. I then rolled in some of Nelson’s tyres to create a more authentic scene. I placed product around the shot and Nelson wore his SnapCam.

I collected the footage from all of the iON Cameras that I had mounted on Nelsons car and put together an edit, I then gave the edit to Nelson asking him to post the clip and tag all relevant iON channels .
